The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary were founded by Nano Nagle in Cork, Ireland, for the purpose of educating poor children. When not teaching, Nano also ministered to the sick. This focus on meeting needs not being met has remained a strong part of the Presentation mission.

The Presentation Sisters arrived in Dakota Territory from Dublin, Ireland, to teach the children of the Lakota Indians and the French settlers in the area. During their first year they experienced ...
The Presentation Sisters arrived in Dakota Territory from Dublin, Ireland, to teach the children of the Lakota Indians and the French settlers in the area. During their first year they experienced the isolation and suffering of the blizzard of 1880. In a letter to the sisters back in Ireland, Mother John Hughes writes: "The only thing to remark at present is the intense cold our of doors - early in the season a boat was caught in the ice on the river and there she remains. You cannot have even an idea of what frost means at home."
